ANG shares responsibility for engineering, network integration, (e.g., selecting, installing and maintaining local ATM networks and ensuring end-to-end TCP/IP connectivity and performance), and operations of the MAGIC testbed. Information about the architecture and operations of the MAGIC testbed is available, including real-time status displays. The proposed architecture for interconnecting MAGIC to other testbeds in a scalable fashion is also detailed.
ATM addresses within the MAGIC testbed are assigned from within a GOSIP Administrative Authority Identifier assigned to the MAGIC project (16768000 or FFDC00 hexadecimal). The NSAP Allocation Plan for the MAGIC testbed assigns ATM addresses assigned in a fashion that will allow hierarchical P-NNI to be used within the MAGIC testbed. This numbering plan also facilitates interconnections with other testbeds.
NetworkCS has proposed a new architecture for the MAGIC Testbed which represents a much more scalable IP/ATM architecture, one that might support such initiatives as the Next Generation Internet or Internet2
One of the objectives of the MAGIC-II project is to interconnect the MAGIC testbed with other testbed in a scalable fashion.
The MAGIC Testbed is interconnected with the vBNS network via the AAI testbed in order to allow researchers at NCAR to collaborate with MAGIC researchers. The March 1998 MAGIC/vBNS interconnection plan is available online. In February 1997, NetworkCS proposed a new architecture for interconnecting the MAGIC and AAI testbeds. This proposed architecture represents a scalable interconnection between the testbeds that will support IP traffic as well as direct end-to-end ATM connections.
We believe that explicit objectives for testbed interconnections are important, but are not aware of consensus on this topic. Therefore, in order to stimulate discussion, we have proposed an objective for testbed interconnections.[Advanced Networking Group Home]
